These are the earliest, most primitive images of "Pepe"
that Matt Furie planted into our collective memory.
People have grown so familiar with the green frog that
they often forget there was once a version drawn in MS
Paint, named after a funny little sound.
Let us remember Pepe in Playtime — the origin of a
legendary meme..
About
Playtime was the inspiration and basis from which he
then went on to create the comic Boy's Club
The foundation of what would become Boy’s Club “started
in a little zine I made on Microsoft Paint that was
called Playtime,” says Furie. “And it featured Brett and
Pepe and I made a really small run of these funny little
drawings.” When it was time to turn that work into
something more substantial, Furie says he took
inspiration from “the zine culture that I saw in San
Francisco. I would go ride my bike to the Kinkos and
make them [issues of Boy’s Club] myself.”
